1 部:言語系学会連合10年の活動と今後の展望 (10 Years of Reflecting on the United Association of Language Studies while Focusing on the Future) » 13:00 ~13:10 - Speaker - 野田 尚史 教授 (国立国語研究所) Dr. Hisashi Noda, National Institute of Japanese Language and Linguistics
2 部:公開シンポジウム » 13:15 ~14:00 - Speaker 1 - チャールズ ブラウン 教授 (明治学院大学) Dr. Charles Browne, Meiji Gakuin University "Vocabulary Development in the Age of ERT: Introducing The NGSL Project" This presentation will introduce 7 open-source, corpus-derived high frequency vocabulary word lists that the presenter helped to create for second language learners of English, and then move on to introduce and demonstrate a large and growing number of free, pedagogically-driven online tools apps and resources for helping to utilize these lists for teaching, learning, assessment, materials creation as well as research and analysis, many of which are perfectly suited for Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). The tools include interactive flashcards, diagnostic tests, games, vocabulary profiling apps, text creation tools, and more. The presentation will also review recent NGSL research. Each word list offers extremely high coverage (92% or higher) of language in that genre and includes lists for general daily English (New General Service List or NGSL), spoken English (New General Service List-Spoken or NGSL-S), academic English (New Academic Word List or NAWL), business English (Business Service List or BSL), TOEIC English (TOEIC Service List or TSL), children’s English (New Dolch List or NDL) and fitness English (Fitness English List or FEL). Most lists were developed in a modular approach so they can be efficiently mixed and matched to meet a broad range of academic needs.
» 14:05 ~14:50 - Speaker 2 - 小張 敬之 教授 (青山学院大学) Dr. Hiroyuki Obari, Aoyama Gakuin University "The Impact of Virtual Online Learning and COIL during the COVID-19" AI and mobile technologies have succeeded in transforming learning methodologies such as blended learning (BL), which combines traditional face-to-face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities, resulting in a more integrated approach to language learning. AI and mobile devices are key components of the next generation of this novel wave of educational instruction. Digital content is becoming transformed and more personalized as AI and mobile technologies continue to develop and improve. The first part of my talk is about 21st century skills + higher order thinking skills, including my philosophy of Education to challenge online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second part of my talk will introduce two case studies, focusing on the CBL project and COIL between Japan and Singapore. The first case study was implemented online from May 2020 to January 2021 using Zoom, Facebook, Line, Messenger, and Moodle. The online lessons were conducted with students from Aoyama Gakuen University (AGU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) using the following pedagogy: FL (Flipped learning), DBL (Design-based learning), TBL (task-based learning), PBL (Problem-solving learning), COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning). Pedagogical training focused on helping students find solutions to many issues now faced in the 21st century. Throughout the online program, training in higher-order thinking skills was emphasized. The second case study was conducted from October 2020 to November 2020. Nineteen AGU students and 19 NUS students participated in a joint seminar conducted using Zoom. In both case studies, students delivered final presentations which were evaluated using PeerEval software. Students benefited from the language and cultural exchanges and provided positive feedback on the 8-week virtual seminar. The results suggest COIL can provide students with many opportunities to use English regularly.
